All About Alaska

When I think of Alaska I think of a cold barren place with lots of ice and snow, and maybe some igloos. Apparently there is more to Alaska than I thought.

Located in the upper northwest region of the North American continent, Alaska is the largest U.S. state by area (larger than the combined area of the next 3 largest states: Texas, California, and Montana) and one of the wealthiest and most racially diverse. Go figure!

Alaska is actually quite a beautiful place with 17 of the top 20 highest peaks in the United States. The icy state also boasts natural wonders like the Yukon River, the third longest river in the U.S. and glaciers like Malaspina the largest in the state.

According to the official state website there are three big misconceptions about Alaska.

Weather is the #1 misconception. Over a third of all vacation/pleasure visitors found the weather better than expected. During the summer, average daytime temperatures throughout the state range from the 60s to the 90s.

Road conditions are usually better than expected. Almost the entire length of the Alaska Highway is asphalt-surfaced, and approximately half of the roads in the state’s highway system are paved.

The third misconception is price. Contrary to popular belief, prices throughout Alaska are generally quite reasonable.

Who knew Alaska could be so pleasant? Next time, I take a vacation I just go to Alaska. It sure sounds a like a great place with plenty of natural wonders to take in.

San Francisco is a city where anything can happen. Hundreds of attractions, thousands of restaurants and bars, and an eclectic mix of locals make this one of California’s most diverse and exciting cities. A stroll down the Haight/Ashbury district or a jaunt through Golden Gate Park will prove that this metropolitan potpourri is bursting at the seams with young professionals, free spirits and independent thinkers alike. As the marine fog of a dewy California morning lifts, some of the most spectacular sites can be viewed from almost any point in the city- from downtown to the wharf. The Golden Gate Bridge peaks its warm, red tones through the mist as Coit Tower emerges from the clouds on its hill overlooking the city. It’s an amazing view that locals never tire of and visitors come from around the globe to view. San Francisco’s shopping scene is one to match that of any major fashion hub. Union Square is home to shops such as Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue and Prada- just to name a few. Shopping in San Francisco is a full day adventure, and is why vistors cannot just spend one day, and locals never tire of this event-filled city. Aside from shopping, San Francisco has intellectually stimulating attractions such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Conservatory of Flowers. Take a cruise on the bay and visit historic Alcatraz Island, witness the famous harbor seals put on a show for the tourists and take-in the spectacular and breathtaking skyline that is San Francisco- truly a city for all walks of life.

california’s beautiful landscape and scenery, mild climate, and diverse population makes it an attractive state to both live in and visit. since the gold rush of 1849, california has become the largest u.s. state in population, with around 37 million people. known as the “golden state,” california provides a rich cultural history, beautiful scenery, arts, entertainment, sports, and a climate that is varied enough to accommodate any type of outdoor recreation, no matter what the season. whether it’s hiking through beautiful redwood forests, skiing on snow-capped mountains, dirt-biking through the sonoran and mojave deserts, or surfing the waves at the beach, there is something to do here all year long. and with venues such as los angeles international airport, experiencing all that california has to offer is quick and easy. california is home to many popular theme parks such as disneyland, six flags magic mountain, knotts berry farm, legoland, universal studios, and sea world. yosemite and death valley national parks are just two of 47 state parks that offers a rich outdoor history and beautiful scenery. upscale clothing boutiques in places such as hollywood and rodeo drive, along with a variety of factory outlet stores and colorful flea markets offer many different shopping experiences. california has so much to do, the possibilities are endless.
